WWE Royal Rumble: Top 5 Superstars with the most eliminations in a single match
The Royal Rumble is one of the most exciting matches in WWE. In this battle royal, the company looks to create new Superstars every year. Over the years, the Royal Rumble has delivered many memorable moments, including surprise entrants and jaw-dropping eliminations.
Several stars often deliver impressive performances in the match. A select group of wrestlers will go down in history as the Iron Man in their respective Royal Rumble Match. These stars lasted longer than anyone else in the battle royal.
Other Superstars have stood out among their fellow competitors with dominant performances. This article offers a look at the five WWE Superstars who recorded the most eliminations in a single Royal Rumble Match.
#1 Brock Lesnar (13) – WWE Royal Rumble 2020
Exactly one year ago, Brock Lesnar delivered one of the most dominant performances in the history of Royal Rumble pay-per-view. He was the first entrant during the match, and he had an unforgettable run in the battle royal. Instead of the usual Royal Rumble commotion, this bout individually matched the next thirteen Superstars against Lesnar.
Once the countdown reached zero, a Superstar would walk out and face Lesnar inside the ring. “The Beast Incarnate” would then easily eliminate his opponent to prepare himself for the next entrant. In the process, Lesnar managed to gain a lot of heat from the fans who desperately wanted to see his elimination.
Lesnar ended the Royal Rumble dreams for thirteen different WWE Superstars that night. He registered the highest number of eliminations in a single match. It is important to note that he also used this opportunity to put over the likes of Keith Lee, Braun Strowman, Ricochet, and Drew McIntyre.
In the middle of the match Lesnar found himself inside the ring with Ricochet and Drew McIntyre. Ricochet then attacked Lesnar with a low blow, and McIntyre used the opportunity to eliminate Brock Lesnar from the Royal Rumble match.
The audience erupted with enthusiasm, as Lesnar’s elimination marked the beginning of the biggest year in McIntyre’s WWE career. Lesnar is also the only Superstar to have eliminated 13 men in a row.
Drew McIntyre eventually won this match, and he then challenged Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania. He instantly became the biggest babyface in the company, and Lesnar ensured that McIntyre came across as a huge threat.
This Royal Rumble performance from Brock Lesnar lends some support to the argument that he delivers dedicated performances when he is enjoying his work. He danced to MVP’s song, hugged Shelton Benjamin before eliminating him, and he acknowledged Keith Lee’s strengths. To complete this brilliant performance, he also sold McIntyre’s Claymore to perfection.
#2 Braun Strowman (13) – WWE Greatest Royal Rumble 2020
This is the only entry in this list which is not from a traditional Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Instead, it dates back to April 2018, when WWE Superstars travelled to Saudi Arabia for the Greatest Royal Rumble. The show’s main event featured 50 Superstars competing in the Royal Rumble, and Braun Strowman emerged with thirteen eliminations to his name.
Strowman made history in WWE by recording the highest number of eliminations in a single Royal Rumble Match. (Brock Lesnar tied that figure two years later.) The only reason why Strowman is second on the list is that his victory didn’t come in the prestigious Royal Rumble match itself.
Nonetheless, this performance was a huge achievement for Strowman. He ended up winning the entire match by eliminating Big Cass. At the time, Strowman was one of the most impressive stars on the roster. Many fans hope that Strowman will have another impressive run sooner rather than later. In fact, some fans expect him to return at the Royal Rumble this year, where he could dominate again.
#3 Roman Reigns (12) – WWE Royal Rumble 2014
Roman Reigns had a dominant performance in the Royal Rumble Match. He entered at the 15th spot, and he ultimately racked up 12 eliminations.
For a brief moment, Reigns joined forces with Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, and The Shield eliminated The Great Khali from the match. Reigns then eliminated both Rollins and Ambrose.
In the end, Reigns and Batista were the only two Superstars left inside the ring. “The Animal” eliminated “The Big Dog” to win the Royal Rumble Match.
Even though the 2014 Royal Rumble will go down in the history books, the pay-per-view is remembered for another reason. The WWE Universe desperately wanted to see Daniel Bryan win the battle royal. But he lost his match against Bray Wyatt earlier in the show, and fans hijacked the last two hours of the event by chanting Bryan’s name.
As a result, Reigns’ 12 eliminations and Batista’s eventual victory were heavily booed by the audience. On the road to WrestleMania, WWE was forced to put Bryan into the title picture because “The Yes! Movement” was unstoppable.
#4 Kane (11) – WWE Royal Rumble 2001
Kane is one of the most underrated Superstars in this promotion’s history, and his consistent dominance in the Royal Rumble Match is one of his defining traits. His performance in 2001 deserves more credit as one of the most memorable outings in Royal Rumble history.
Kane was the sixth entrant in that Royal Rumble match, and he spent close to an hour inside the ring. He eliminated a total of eleven WWE Superstars, including the likes of The Rock. There were also brief moments in the match where Kane teamed up with The Undertaker to take on other competitors. He was the last person to be eliminated from the Royal Rumble match, as he was thrown out by the eventual winner, Stone Cold Steve Austin.
To put things into perspective, the second-highest number of eliminations in this match was recorded by The Undertaker, who threw four Superstars over the top rope. Overall, the match was engaging, and Austin picked up his third Royal Rumble win once he managed to get rid of “The Devil’s Favorite Demon.”
Kane’s dominance in the Royal Rumble Match is unparalleled. He holds the record for the most number of eliminations (44) in Royal Rumble history. This number will surely be hard to top.
#5 ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin (10) – WWE Royal Rumble 1997
In 1997, Stone Cold Steve Austin eliminated 10 Superstars before he won the Royal Rumble. In the process, he tied the record for the most eliminations in a single match. Hulk Hogan had held that feat since 1989. This win also marked the first-ever Royal Rumble victory for Steve Austin.
Austin was the fifth entrant in the match, and he eliminated the likes of The Undertaker and Owen Hart. Austin spent 45 minutes inside the ring, and he had the crowd’s support throughout the bout. “The Texas Rattlesnake” battled against the most prominent names of the promotion. In the end, he emerged victorious by eliminating Bret Hart in a controversial manner.
Austin would then win the Royal Rumble in 1998 and again in 2001, making him the most successful Superstar (three wins) in Royal Rumble history. In both 1998 and 2001, Austin won the world title at WrestleMania after he won the battle royal in both years.
In an exciting turn of events, his record for he most Royal Rumble eliminations in a single match was beaten by Kane on the same day that Austin earned another historic achievement.
