WWE Is Trying To Get John Cena Back For When Fans Return [Report]

WWE is reportedly working on getting John Cena back for the first show back in front of fans on July 16, 2021.

WWE has announced when it will return to live touring. The July 16, 2021 edition of SmackDown will kick off a 25 date tour starting in Houston, Texas. Money in the Bank will also take place in front of live fans two days later, as will the Raw 24 hours later after that. Locations for the other 22 dates are yet to be announced. They will be the first shows to take place in front of fans for more than a year, other than WrestleMania 37.

That first SmackDown is going to be treated like a very big deal. Perhaps on par with the blue brand’s debut on Fox. As far as what WWE has planned for it two months ahead of time, Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer reports the company is already in talks to get John Cena back, even if it’s for one night only.

Cena is quickly becoming The Rock in terms of his transition from wrestling to acting. He hasn’t wrestled or even appeared in WWE since losing a Firefly Funhouse match at WrestleMania 36. Cena also didn’t appear at WrestleMania 37, the first show of shows he has missed since WrestleMania X-8. The 16-time World Champion was busy filming his Peacemaker spinoff series.

Cena certainly isn’t trying to distance himself from the wrestling world. It comes up in almost every interview he conducts, the most recent of which he admitted he wants to return as he misses wrestling. He also said he can’t wait for the fans to return. If WWE really has spoken to Cena about being in attendance on July 16, it’s possible he could have been foreshadowing Friday’s news during that interview.

If Cena returns, it will be interesting to see what role he plays. Whether he returns for one night only, like Rock during SmackDown’s Fox debut, or if he sticks around and actually wrestles. By the time fans return, SummerSlam will be right around the corner. Perhaps his potential return on July 16 will start his road to a big match on that PPV, and maybe even see him win a 17th World Title and break Ric Flair’s record.
