[Rumor] John Cena Could Headline SummerSlam
It’s being rumored that John Cena could headline SummerSlam this coming August after a lengthy absence. Cena hasn’t wrestled since WrestleMania 36 last year and missed WrestleMania 37, his first WM absence in a very long time.
His last outing saw him lose to The Fiend in a Firefly Fun House match, a cinematic piece that was the first of its kind. According to Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men podcast, the 16-time World Champion could be the main spectacle when SummerSlam comes around in a few months. This was pointed out by WrestleTalk.
Zarian was the one who broke the news on WWE’s plans to return to the road in July.
“Andrew Zarian, who was first to report that WWE was resuming live touring in July, strongly hinted that Cena will headline SummerSlam 2021,” the publication notes.
Cena is also reported as being set to appear on the July 16 episode of WWE SmackDown that will mark WWE’s return to touring.
There’s been some speculation as to who Cena could fight at SummerSlam, with Roman Reigns thought to be the one. Reigns made his sensational return to WWE at SummerSlam last year and has been dominating the roster since then. Should he face Cena at the PPV, he would likely come out on the victorious end as Cena has no reason not to put stars over given his commitment to Hollywood.
When Is SummerSlam 2021?
It’s been reported that SummerSlam will air from the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on a Saturday – specifically, August 21.
There are a number of other venues under consideration, however. But, should Vegas get the event, it will be their first SummerSlam ever.
