Mark Henry Says He Felt Like Someone Under Vince McMahon Was Holding Him Back At WWE
WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry has revealed having told Vince McMahon he felt like someone under the WWE Chairman was hindering his progress while at the company. The World’s Strongest Man was unveiled as a high-profile signing by AEW during Double or Nothing this past Sunday.
On Tuesday, the younger promotion revealed the icon’s contract situation and the roles he is expected to take up within the organization.
As to what led to his split from WWE, Henry said his contract had been up a while. Speaking on Busted Open Radio, a show he co-hosts, the veteran revealed he wanted a position in the office and relayed as much to McMahon, who asked him to put it in writing. Having watched a number of talents and other employees get cut over the last year, Henry says he felt valuable to still be around but perspectives change when deals expire and he wanted to do more.
That meant looking for an opportunity elsewhere.
Henry also opened up on his conversation with the WWE boss, claiming it was very positive. However, he did let McMahon know he felt there was someone else was holding him back.
“It wasn’t negative. Vince and I have love for each other,” he pointed out (H/T Itrwrestling.com). “More than love, respect. Me calling him and saying him what needs to be said, came from a place of a brother telling his older brother, ‘I’m tired of being in shadows. I feel like someone beneath you is holding me back. if someone is holding me back, I have to go’.”
How Vince McMahon Reacted To Mark Henry Asking To Leave
According to Henry, McMahon was not opposed to letting him go and gave him his blessing. While it wasn’t what McMahon wanted, he told Henry he knows everything he needs to know to be successful and could move on should he want that.
Henry added: “I feel like I was being held back and not getting what I want, and I want to be successful and earn more. [Vince said,] ‘You know everything you need to know. If you feel like you need to go, I don’t necessarily want it, but if you need to go then go. I know you’ll be successful.’ That’s what you want. I’m not going to run from a conversation like that. Nobody will say Mark henry is un-loyal. There were times I was offered more money and didn’t leave. Everything wasn’t perfect, but what family is perfect? I had a good experience and learned a lot. I spent more time in production and the trucks than I did around the ring and in catering. I always had an executive mindset.”
