5 Returning WWE Superstars who could main event SummerSlam against Roman Reigns apart from John Cena
Universal Champion Roman Reigns is currently in the middle of arguably his best singles run in WWE. Turning him heel at SummerSlam 2020 last year was a masterstroke and he has since been dominating the roster of SmackDown.
In all likeliness, Reigns will hold on to his title at least until WWE SummerSlam 2021 where the promotion would be planning a huge match for him, most likely in the main event.
Recent reports have suggested that it could be none other than 16-time world champion John Cena to challenge The Tribal Chief for his Universal Championship in the main event of SummerSlam 2021. But there are still nearly three months to go for the pay-per-view, and plans could change.
Let’s take a look at five returning WWE Superstars apart from John Cena who could main event WWE SummerSlam 2021 against Roman Reigns. Be sure to comment down and let us know which of these matches would you like to see the most at The Biggest Party of the Summer.
#5 Roman Reigns vs. Goldberg
The bout that almost took place at WrestleMania 36, Roman Reigns vs. Goldberg is a match that WWE would definitely want to have before the latter hangs up his wrestling boots.
WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg has had a knack of returning and challenging for a world title in the last couple of years. His last match took place at WWE Royal Rumble 2021 where he unsuccessfully challenged the then WWE Champion Drew McIntyre for his title.
With him not having any match at WrestleMania 37, he will most likely step in the ring once more this year which might happen at WWE’s second-biggest show of the year, SummerSlam.
Despite all the fan backlash about Goldberg taking the spot of a more deserving young superstar, there’s no denying that he is a massive box-office attraction.
Fans would surely love to see him wrestle live, and this opportunity could be used by WWE to further solidify Roman Reigns’ dominant run as the Universal Champion. In fact, can he retire Goldberg if this match happens?
#4 Roman Reigns vs. Edge
After not being able to do “The Battle of Spears” between Roman Reigns and Goldberg last year, WWE tried to do it at this year’s WrestleMania with Reigns taking on WWE Hall of Famer Edge. It all started with The Rated-R Superstar winning the 2021 men’s Royal Rumble match and choosing to face the Universal Champion at WrestleMania 37.
However, the match was later changed into a triple threat with Daniel Bryan entering the mix on the Road to WrestleMania 37. In the main event of Night Two of the pay-per-view, Roman Reigns defeated both Edge and Daniel Bryan to retain his title.
Edge has since been away from WWE TV but he is now being promoted to appear on the July 16th episode of Friday Night SmackDown, which will be the WWE’s first show on their return to touring with live fans.
We might just see him restart his feud against Reigns, claiming that he never got his one-on-one match for the Universal Championship. This could lead to a title match between him and Roman Reigns in the main event of SummerSlam 2021.
#3 Roman Reigns vs. Keith Lee
One of the returning WWE Superstars on the current roster who could go up against Roman Reigns at SummerSlam 2021 is Keith Lee. The former NXT Champion has been away from WWE TV for a while now and fans have been eager to see him return and find out what plans the company has for him.
Recently, it was reported that his fiance and WWE Superstar Mia Yim, who was also known as Reckoning as part of the faction RETRIBUTION, is set to move to the Blue brand. If that is the case, we might see Keith Lee also jumping brands and appearing on Friday Night SmackDown soon.
Lee had a great run back on NXT but his booking on the main roster has left the fans disappointed. WWE could fix this by letting him main event The Biggest Party of the Summer against the Universal Champion Roman Reigns.
Lee and Reigns also have some interesting history together dating back to WWE Survivor Series 2019. Representing Team NXT, Keith Lee gave a memorable performance in the men’s traditional Survivor Series match, pinning Seth Rollins and even reaching the final two alongside RAW’s Roman Reigns.
The then NXT Superstar almost won it for his team before falling short against Reigns. The two then bumped fists showing respect for each other after the match, in what was a star-making moment for Keith Lee.
#2 Roman Reigns vs. “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt
“The Fiend” Bray Wyatt is one star who has some unfinished business with Roman Reigns. It was at WWE SummerSlam 2020 where The Fiend defeated Braun Strowman in the main event to win his second Universal Championship.
However, his moment of victory was cut short by Reigns, who returned after months of absence with newfound aggression and took out both Wyatt and Strowman. Reigns even called Wyatt “a freak in a mask”.
Just a week later, Roman Reigns had turned into a proper heel and defeated Strowman and The Fiend in a triple threat to win the Universal Championship, a title that he still holds. While many were expecting Wyatt to continue his feud against Reigns, that didn’t happen with the former moving over to Monday Night RAW.
The Fiend last appeared at WrestleMania 37 where he lost his match against Randy Orton after Alexa Bliss turned on him. He has since been away from WWE TV and his alliance with Bliss is also over. We might just see him move over to SmackDown and challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship at SummerSlam 2021.
Last year, Bray Wyatt introduced the WWE Universe to a new character in his Firefly Fun House – Wobbly Walrus, a puppet after the special counsel of Roman Reigns, Paul Heyman. There are a lot of things still left unexplored in this rivalry. While the feud between the two would be amazing, the only question to ask here is – who will take the loss?
#1 Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar
Arguably one of the biggest matches that the WWE Universe wants to see Roman Reigns in right now is against “The Beast Incarnate” Brock Lesnar. The two have a storied history, having faced each other multiple times, including two WrestleMania main events.
There was a time when fans wanted WWE to stop booking these two against each other. But things have completely changed now with Reigns turning heel and aligning with Paul Heyman, the former advocate of Lesnar.
One of the biggest questions since the heel turn on Roman Reigns last year has been – what will happen once Brock Lesnar returns? If things come down to that, who will Heyman choose between his former client and The Tribal Chief? This in itself has the potential to be a compelling storyline, something that fans desperately want to see.
Now, Brock Lesnar has been away from WWE TV for over a year. Not just that, his contract with WWE also reportedly expired last year. With Lesnar being a massive attraction, Vince McMahon might bring him back once WWE returns to live touring.
Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship has money written all over it. Can The Beast Incarnate be the one to finally dethrone The Head of the Table?
