[Report] WWE Is Building Towards Brock Lesnar’s Return For SummerSlam

Brock Lesnar hasn’t appeared on WWE programming in over 14 months now, but it looks like the company is planning out his return for the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view.

Lesnar’s last WWE appearance was at WrestleMania 36. He lost the WWE Championship to Drew McIntyre, and the company has kept him off of television ever since. Lesnar’s WWE contract reportedly expired last summer, and though he’s technically a free agent, there aren’t any major hints to suggest that he would consider leaving for another company.

On the Mat Men Pro Wrestling Podcast (h/t WrestlingNews.co), Andrew Zarian said he expects “to see all of the big names that make sense.” This includes Lesnar, and Zarian added that the former WWE Champion was part of the early SummerSlam plans. Zarian believes that WWE is trying to figure out how much they’ll pay Lesnar as well as a “consistent touring schedule” before they start building up his return.

On Wrestling Observer Live (h/t Ringside News), Bryan Alvarez suggested that WWE was building toward’s Lesnar’s return. He noted that the latter’s name was mentioned during this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw. McIntyre brought up his WrestleMania 36 victory over Lesnar, and Bobby Lashley asked why they were talking about somebody who doesn’t work there. Alvarez thinks that this could be the start of a buildup for a Lashley-Lesnar match at SummerSlam.

“When I heard that I thought that they are building toward Lashley vs Lesnar,” Alvarez explained. “That is a match that they have not done. It is a match that people have been asking for a long time and maybe that’s their plan for SummerSlam. Maybe that is their plan for WrestleMania, etc.”

SummerSlam 2021 will take place on Sat. Aug. 21. The location will be announced during the Belmont Stakes pre-show on NBC this Saturday.

Lesnar’s Last WWE Match

As noted above, Lesnar’s last match was with McIntyre at WrestleMania 36. Per WWE tradition, Lesnar was technically entitled to a WWE Championship rematch, but it obviously never happened. Lashley vs. Lesnar is a dream match that many fans have called for, but if it doesn’t happen, a Lesnar-McIntyre rematch feels like a safe bet to happen. One way or another, it sounds like Lesnar will return to WWE very soon.
