John Cena likely to make blockbuster WWE comeback, could face Roman Reigns at SummerSlam: Report
Once the face of WWE, John Cena is now a part-time superstar and hasn’t been on the show since Wrestlemania 36. Cena is now a full-time actor and hasn’t competed in an in-ring match since January 2019. He also missed his first Wrestlemania since his debut as Cena didn’t appear in the biggest event of 2021.
As per reports, Cena is likely to make his in-ring comeback this year. And he might be given a title opportunity against none other than Roman Reigns. As per Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE is likely to book a match between John Cena and Roman Reigns.
Reigns is the Universal Champion and will be defending his title at the biggest event of the Summer if WWE books the contest. “Stories going around are that WWE has a main event and a guest host to make it stadium-worthy. The leading rumor is Roman Reigns vs. John Cena for the Universal title. We do know that as of last week they were in talks with Cena,” Meltzer said.
Reigns has been the face of the company since his return at SummerSlam 2020 and won the Universal Championship a week later. He has successfully defended his title at multiple pay-per-view events since then and also main-evented night 2 of Wrestlemania 37, where he defeated Edge and Daniel Bryan.
He has already defended the title twice since Wrestlemania 37 and will continue to put the Universal Championship on the line at pay-per-view events. Both Cena and Reigns have squared off in past.
Cena is a 16-time World Champion but has never won Universal Championship. Reigns is a two-time Universal Champion but has never defended this title against Cena. The result of the SummerSlam main event, if it takes place between the mentioned superstars, will largely depend on Cena’s in-ring future. Should Cena stay in WWE for a long time, he can also defeat Reigns.
