[Report] Update On WWE’s Plans For Roman Reigns Vs The Rock

Although WWE remains intent on running a dream match between Roman Reigns and The Rock, the match wouldn’t happen for a while.

On Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Louis Dangoor of WrestleTalk) Dave Meltzer reported that WWE hopes to run the marquee match at one of the next two WrestleMania events. Though Meltzer noted that the match “gets tougher” every year as The Rock gets older, the latter remains keen on facing his cousin.

“Obviously The Rock & Roman Reigns is something that they’re building towards and it would be — every year gets tougher and tougher because Dwayne gets a year older and, you know, but I think he really wants to do a match against Roman Reign,” Meltzer explained. “I think for sure it’ll be in next two WrestleManias, and if he can pull it off, the next WrestleMania.”

The Rock announced his retirement from professional wrestling two years ago. However, the wrestler-turned-actor has expressed and interest in facing his cousin several times, and he’s even willing to put the Universal Champion over. Reigns also stated that a match with his cousin at WrestleMania “makes sense.”

WWE has been pushing Reigns as its top heel for nearly 10 months now. He defeated Hall of Famer Edge and fellow legend Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 37. Reigns will reportedly face 16-time World Champion John Cena in the main event of SummerSlam 2021 on Aug. 21 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Clearly, the company is intent on pushing Reigns to a whole new level by having him square off with several legends.

Roman Reigns and The Rock

WrestleMania 38 will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Apr. 3, 2022. WrestleMania 39 will take place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on Apr. 2, 2023. The “Hollywood” marketing for WrestleMania 39 would obviously mark an ideal time and stage to run the Reigns-Rock match.

WWE is reportedly hoping to bring The Rock in for Survivor Series 2021. If he makes an appearance, perhaps that will mark the beginning of the buildup for a dream match with his cousin.

The Rock Vs Roman Reigns Feels Inevitable

Both The Rock and Reigns are clearly keen on this match. And with WWE looking to enhance Reigns’ push and stardom, they have every reason to run this dream showdown. Simply put, this match feels like a matter of when and not if.
