[Report] Cesaro’s Future As A WWE Main Eventer Revealed
WWE Smackdown wrestler Cesaro received a long-awaited Universal Championship opportunity at WrestleMania Backlash, but his time in the main event scene may already be
The Swiss Superman lost a thrilling match to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania Backlash a month ago. Instead of getting a rematch, Cesaro rekindled his feud with Seth Rollins, whom he defeated at WrestleMania 37. The two squared off again at Sunday’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view, with The Architect winning via pinfall.
On Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Ringside News), Dave Meltzer explained WWE’s decision to give Cesaro a very brief push. Daniel Bryan had already put Cesaro over, and Reigns was in need of a new opponent following his feud with Bryan. But Meltzer emphasized that we shouldn’t expect to see Cesaro back in the main event scene.
“Look, Cesaro has been there for how many years? If Vince McMahon liked him he would have been in the main event for seven years,” Meltzer said. “This is where they slotted him. Roman needed an opponent, he was getting a little hot. Now it’s back to whatever, they probably have an idea for Seth now. You know Seth put him over on the way up, and then he put Seth over on the way down. This was probably determined months ago.”
Reigns has since entered a feud with Rey and Dominik Mysterio, defeating the former in a Universal Championship match on last week’s episode of SmackDown. It’s widely believed that Reigns will headline SummerSlam 2021 (on Aug. 21 in Las Vegas, Nevada) against John Cena. Indeed, his program with Cesaro is over.
Reigns defeated Bryan on the Apr. 30 episode of SmackDown, and per the match stipulation, the latter was banished from the show. His WWE contract expired soon after, and Bryan remains a free agent. Cesaro was then pushed into the main event spotlight, and his bout with Reigns was a true match of the year candidate.
At Least WWE Gave Cesaro A Run
Even if it didn’t last long, it was nice to see Cesaro get a chance in the main event spotlight. He has displayed a remarkable ability to put on top-notch matches against marquee superstars like Bryan, Rollins and Reigns. It’s too bad that WWE won’t give Cesaro a look with a major championship, but at least he made the most of his short run as a main eventer.
