[Report] Backstage Reason For Kevin Owens’ WWE Hiatus Revealed

Kevin Owens‘ upcoming hiatus from WWE programming is reportedly part of a storyline.

After losing to Sami Zayn on Sunday, Owens tweeted that he needed a break and promised to be back soon. According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Andrew Ravens Of WrestlingNews.co), Owens’ break from WWE television is simply “storyline-related.”

This isn’t uncommon in WWE. We’ve seen several notable stars spend several weeks (even months) off of television with no storyline explanation whatsoever. It’s unclear how long Owens will be kept off of television, but it’s worth noting that the Money in the Bank 2021 pay-per-view is on July 18.  Ricochet, Riddle and John Morrison qualified on this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw, but it looks like Owens will be absent from any possible qualifiers on Friday’s episode of SmackDown.

Owens has faced off against Apollo Crews in a series of Intercontinental Championship matches in recent weeks, but the latter has successfully retained his title on each occasion. Owens also continues to feud with Zayn, whom he defeated in a singles match at WrestleMania 37.

The former Universal Champion spent several months in the main event scene on SmackDown, feuding with Roman Reigns. The two squared off for the title at TLC and the Royal Rumble, but Owens came up short on both occasions.

WWE Has Options For Kevin Owens When He Returns

With Owens seemingly set to go on a hiatus, it’s quite likely that he’ll feud with new opponents when he returns. If that’s the case, it’ll be interesting to see what WWE does with the fan favorite.

Owens is capable of working anywhere, be it the main event scene, mid-card or tag team division. Could Owens possibly team up with Cesaro, or feud with another heel like Seth Rollins? Might he re-enter the main event scene? Needless to say, WWE will have plenty of options with how to use him when Owens returns.
