Toni Storm Joins NXT Stars Backstage On SmackDown, Competes In Dark Match

Toni Storm is the latest NXT Superstar to be in attendance backstage on the main roster, competing in a dark match on SmackDown.

As WWE continues its quest to completely overhaul the main roster, more and more NXT Superstars are getting tryouts ahead of possible call-ups. The latest stars to receive the call and compete in dark matches were Toni Storm and Odyssey Jones. Both competed in matches off-camera on SmackDown this week along with some of the others who have been doing the same for the last few weeks.

Toni Storm Joins The Tryout Circuit

According to PWInsider, Storm competed in a match against fellow NXT star Shotzi Blackheart. Blackheart has also wrestled in at least one other of these trial matches since they started. Storm only recently made the permanent move to NXT from NXT UK and could already be in line to make another step up if WWE officials like what they see.

As for Jones, fans might not be all that familiar with the relatively new NXT recruit. Jones has a college football background and is yet to wrestle a televised NXT match. While it’s unclear why he has received a tryout alongside some more established names, it may be because Vince McMahon visited the Performance Center this week. Jones is the kind of wrestler who would likely catch the chairman’s eye.

Kross’s Trial Matches Continue

Storm wrestled Blackheart in her dark match while Jones competed against Bobby Roode. The only other NXT star to get a tryout on SmackDown was Karrion Kross. Kross has had the most tryout matches so far, even competing in a televised bout on Main Event. Either WWE officials can’t make their minds up on whether to call him up or not, or Kross has impressed and they are prepping him for a full call-up.

The other NXT star to be a part of these tryouts in previous weeks is Bronson Reed. Reed hasn’t had as many trial matches as Kross, but he did lose the North American Title on NXT this week. That could be an indicator that the Aussie is done on the black and gold brand and will be showing up on Raw or SmackDown any day now.
