Backstage Update On John Cena’s SummerSlam Status

In recent weeks, there have been several reports regarding a potential John Cena appearance at SummerSlam 2021, set for Aug. 21 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

On Thursday, however, it was reported that Cena is joining the cast for the upcoming film, Argylle. The star-studded cast will also include Samuel L. Jackson, Henry Cavill, Catherine O’Hara, Bryan Cranston, Sam Rockewell and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Argylle will begin filming in Europe next month, seemingly putting Cena’s SummerSlam 2021 status in jeopardy. But it sounds like Cena will actually make it to the Biggest Party of the Summer.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that the wrestler-turned actor “is free of responsibilities for acting work at this point and until after SummerSlam” and that a Cena-Roman Reigns match “is locked in as the main event for the show.”

Finally, Meltzer also stated that Cena “could start after or end prior to the date, or even get a few days off.” The 16-time World Champion had to miss WrestleMania 37 because he was filming the Peacemaker television series on HBO Max in Vancouver, British Columbia.

For several weeks, it has been reported that Cena will face Reigns at SummerSlam. WWE has pushed the latter as a main event heel for almost 11 months now, and a match with Cena would only enhance Reigns’ stardom over on SmackDown. The two superstars faced off at No Mercy 2017, with Reigns defeating Cena.

Cena Vs Reigns Would Be A SummerSlam Classic

There would be so many enticing storylines regarding a potential Cena-Reigns SummerSlam match. The latter has yet to lose cleanly since he returned at SummerSlam 2020 last year. If Cena defeats Reigns, of course, he would set the all time record for most World Championship reigns (17). This would be a much more exciting match compared to their bout at No Mercy four years earlier, given Reigns’ status as a top-tier heel right now. We’ll just have to wait and see if it actually happens.
